I had a bad feeling about the strange boy in the mall that day. When I caught sight of him staring across the crowd towards Millie and the others, as they watched the performance of a super talented singer, I knew immediately that something was not quite right. With his thoughts filtering through to my own, I became aware of the frightening words being spoken in his head. While he was not a threat to me, I knew instantly that he was definitely a concern for Julia. He appeared to be planning revenge and although I had no idea why, his intentions were very clear. He wanted Julia and her “loser” friend to pay for what they’d done. They were his exact words and although I had no idea what incident he was referring to, he was obviously quite determined to go ahead with his plan. A dripping hatred poured from his intense stare, which was both ugly and frightening at the same time. It made my skin crawl. Pleased to see him eventually turn away, I stood watching as he disappeared into the crowd of shoppers who filled the mall and hoped that I’d been mistaken. Perhaps I’d misinterpreted his thoughts and there was nothing to worry about after all. But I struggled to believe that was the case, and worse still, I knew there was very little I could do about it. There was no way I could bring myself to walk up to Julia and warn her. I knew who she was but we hadn’t even been introduced yet and I could just imagine how weird she’d think I was if I tried to explain. “Hey Julia. I’m Millie’s new friend, Emmie. I just read this kid’s mind and I don’t want to scare you but he was making a terrible threat. I think you might be in danger.” As if I could really say that! She’d probably think I was crazy and simply laugh it off. She’d probably also wonder why Millie had become friends with someone so odd.
