Literary translations - Also experienced in medical and legal translations/Traduccion de obras literarias; experiencia en traducciones medicas y legales

I am in the process of developing my second career as a translator and currently completing a translation certificate program at a well-known university as part of my preparation to take the American Translator’s Association (ATA) Test. I have extensive experience in technical, medical/clinical translations and some experience as a court interpreter and the translation of legal documents. I am enamored of literary translations and seeking to develop an extensive portfolio of these.

I consider myself equally fluent in English and Spanish. I learned Spanish at my mother’s knee, but I received my entire superior education in English. 

I read for pleasure (voraciously) in both languages and have developed the habit of reading books both in their original language and then in translation.

One of my favorite works of fiction is “One hundred years of solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  I first read the book in Spanish. Then I read the book in English, translated by the great Gregory Rabassa; I was amazed by the magic Rabassa worked in his translation. That experience lit the spark of my interest in literary translations. 

I am a retired nurse administrator. I was born in Cuba to Spanish parents. I spent my middle childhood years in the Basque Country in Spain.  I came to the United States at twelve and lived in New York until a few years ago when the warmer climate of Florida beckoned. I love animals, and I am an inveterate world traveler.  

 

Estoy en proceso de desarrollar mi segunda carrera como traductora y completando un programa  de certificación como tal en una conocida universidad estadounidense. Cuando termine, estaré lista para tomar el examen de la American Translators’ Association (ATA). Mi experiencia en la traducción de documentos médicos/clínicos es amplia y tengo experiencia como intérprete de corte y traductora de documentos legales. Estoy enamorada de la traducción de obras literarias y en proceso de compilar un porfolio extensivo de traducciones de estas.

Domino el inglés y el español con igual fluidez. Aprendí el español en el regazo de mi madre, pero cursé mi educación superior por entero en los Estados Unidos. Suelo comparar mi relación con los dos idiomas al ser ambidiestro.

Leo vorazmente tanto en inglés como en español y a través de los años he adquirido la costumbre de leer la obra en su idioma original y más tarde en traducción por el simple placer de ello.

Uno de mis libros favoritos es “Cien años de soledad” por Gabriel García Márquez.  Mi primera lectura de esa obra fue en español. Después la leí traducida al inglés por el gran Gregory Rabassa; la magia que Rabassa pudo hacer con su traducción me impresiono profundamente. ¡Se podía oír la voz de García Márquez en ingles! La experiencia despertó mi interés por la traducción de obras literarias.

Nací en Cuba de padres españoles. Entre los siete y los doce años viví en la aldea vizcaína de España, donde nació mi padre. Vine a los Estados Unidos a los doce años y viví en Nueva York hasta hace poco, cuando no me pude resistir más a la llamada del clima cálido de la Florida. Soy lectora voraz, amante de los animales, y viajera incansable.
