Consuelo Cardozo is an English-Spanish Translator certified by New York University’s School of Continuing Education and skilled by almost thirty years of freelance translating.
Consuelo learned English in Kindergarten (Logan, USA), but had very few opportunities to practice the language when she returned to Bolivia, her homeland. Thanks to her mother, Consuelo nurtured and developed her budding English with books. Not only did she multiply her vocabulary, but also became an avid reader.
Consuelo studied Biology for two years at Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, the Bolivian public university in La Paz, the seat of government. After spending most of her time researching the origins of the study of science in Bolivia (unpublished text submitted to the University) and compiling scientific studies in Ecology in Bolivia (published as Bibliografía Boliviana de Ecología [Bolivian Bibliography of Studies in Ecology] , Tübingen, Germany, Instituto de Colaboración Científica, 1989; 240 pp.), she realised language was her field.
Twenty years after having learned English, she regained her oral fluency in New York, where she lived and studied for two years. Her practice in Ad-Tech Translation Agency provided her with brief internships at MacMillan Editorial, the Spanish Edition of New York Yellow Pages, and Columbia University. To increase her practice, she did voluntary translations for New York’s Natural History Museum.
Consuelo has been doing translations for individual customers on topics ranging from stories and poems to medical and legal documents. Her translations also extended to government agencies such as the Bolivian Ministry of Agriculture, the National Agrarian Reform Commission and the National Colonisation Institute. She has also translated documents for international organisations, including the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA); the UK International Service (IS); Caritas Australia; Save the Children US and Save the Children Canada; and the German, Swiss, and Dutch chapters of terres de hommes. Consuelo has also worked on documents commissioned by more than twenty non-governmental organisations, most of them engaged in child’s rights, gender, rural development, emergency issues, and environmental concerns.
Her published translations include:
1) Alejandro Cussianovich Villarán and Moisés Bazán Novoa
The experience of self-organisation: What is this thing called participation? terre des homes Deutschland, May 2009
2) Pablo Regalsky
Rakaypampa: The Complex Roads of an Andean Community
Centro de Comunicación y Desarrollo Andino, 1994
3) Doing Business in Bolivia (Information guide)
Price Waterhouse, 1988, as part of the translation team
4) Marko Lewis
Marko in Mossland, Species of Bryophytes in Bolivia
La Paz, Instituto de Ecología, 1985
Consuelo has done translations regularly for users of US consulate services in Cochabamba, and she has been included in the List of Translators of the US Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia (http://photos.state.gov/libraries/bolivia/22433/ACSPDF/LPZ-CBB-SRZMasterList.pdf).
In the last five years, she has translated more than one hundred articles for Mongabay, a website seeking to raise interest in and appreciation of wild lands and wildlife, while examining the impact of emerging trends in climate, technology, economics, and finance on conservation and development (www.mongabay.com). Although language is the focus of her work, Consuelo has kept in touch with a subject that she always held dear: Nature and its preservation.
However, throughout these years and as always, books in English and Spanish, about any topic, have been a constant in Consuelo’s life.
