Finding the imagery, feelings and cultural references that underlie words: the heart of translating. / Encontrar el imaginario, los sentimientos y las referencias culturales que subyacen a las palabras: ese es el corazón de la traducción.

Having grown up in Argentina, I attended high school in Italy and later graduated with a BA in Hispanic Literature and Japanese Studies from Macalester College, in Minnesota. For the last fifteen years I have worked as a teacher at two international high schools in Norway and in the US (https://www.uwc.org), where I have taught Hispanic literature, Spanish as a second language and epistemology courses.  

I have done technical translations for companies such as Masel Orthodontics (Pennsylvania, US: maselortho.com) and Friolatina (Mendoza, Argentina: friolatina.com), but I have also translated literary pieces as part of my teaching work and as a hobby from which I derive much pleasure.

Apart from experience, I believe the special strengths I bring to my translation work are tied to the fact that I have lived for extended periods of time in countries where my target languages are spoken. In the case of the US, Argentina, Italy, Spain and Norway, I can confidently say I feel equally at home in all of them. This is relevant because cultural knowledge, when applied to translation work, allows for nuancing and detail that might otherwise be missed.

Furthermore, having spent years discussing Literature with students from all over the Hispanic world, I am very familiar with most varieties of Spanish and can produce texts that are either country-specific or more neutral in nature, as required. /

 

Transcurrida mi niñez en Argentina, asistí al secundario en Italia y más tarde obtuve mi licenciatura en Literatura Hispánica y Estudios Japoneses en Macalester College, en Minnesota. Luego, durante estos últimos quince años, he sido docente en dos escuelas secundarias internacionales en Noruega y en los EE.UU. (https://www.uwc.org), donde he enseñado cursos de literatura hispana, español como segunda lengua, y epistemología.

He realizado traducciones técnicas para empresas como Masel Orthodontics (Pensilvania, Estados Unidos: maselortho.com) y Friolatina (Mendoza, Argentina: friolatina.com), pero también he traducido piezas literarias en el transcurso de mi trabajo docente y como un pasatiempo del cual derivo gran placer.

Aparte de la experiencia, creo que el haber vivido bastante tiempo en países donde se hablan mis lenguas elegidas es un punto a favor en mis traducciones. Específicamente, en el caso de EE.UU., Argentina, Italia, España y Noruega, me siento igualmente a gusto en todos ellos, y eso es relevante porque el conocimiento cultural, cuando se aplica a la traducción, facilita la transmisión de matices y detalles que de otro modo podrían perderse.

Finalmente, debido a años de conversaciones literarias con estudiantes de todo el mundo hispano, estoy bastante familiarizado con muchas de las variedades de esta lengua y puedo producir textos con tintes nacionales específicos o más neutrales, según sea necesario.
