Transformation is big business these days. It’s everywhere. It’s in universities and corporations; self-help books, churches and community organizations. But what is it, and how do you know when it has happened to you?
Most people believe that transforming their life will be effortless. Money will suddenly flow, careers will become fulfilling, and they will live happily ever after with the sweetheart of their dreams. Truth is; that’s the best case scenario. It’s the ol’ “For whatsoever a man [woman] soweth, that shall he [she] also reap.”
Transformation isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I say this as an expert in the field of transformational coaching and leadership. And I encourage all my clients and trainees to think carefully before embarking on this journey of transforming. It isn’t a cake walk and it’s definitely not for sissies or the faint of heart.
To transform, one has to cultivate awareness of what they choose to do and think, so they can choose differently – only in service to what they say they want.
One has to change their intentions, their perceptions and orientation, and in many cases, change their commitments. It takes a hell of a lot of work, and my experience is that most people just don’t want to work that hard. I know I didn’t want to work that hard; I still don’t. However, I got wrangled into this transformation process as I was backing away from another life adventure. The title of one of my books, The Unholy Path of a Reluctant Adventurer, says it all.
At the same time, I know that each of us has the capacity to be the fullest expression of our unique essential nature. That’s why I’m so impassioned with my job as a transformational coach; I continually empower myself to empower you to live into your desire to experience the delight of your full potentiality, whatever that means to you. Both of us transform through the process.
That’s the fun part that comes after we’ve done the walking-your-talk stuff; the empowering oneself to move through the messy, raw, vulnerable human stuff; the “What the hell was I thinking?” stuff.
So, I want to give you a few guidelines, signposts, and indicators that will help you along this journey of transformation. Perhaps they will inspire you to keep moving forward through your transformational whirlwinds, or validate that you really do have the daring necessary to take this journey in the first place.
Either way, I think you’ll find you are further along the road than you ever imagined.
