Athena opened her eyes to face her miserable world in a tiny room that felt like a steaming hot sauna. The unbearable heat, along with her intense anxiety for her unforeseeable future, had kept her awake till the very early hours of the day when she had finally managed to get some sleep.
Unfortunately, her mother’s incessant banging on her pots and pans in the kitchen, trying to cook their meal for the day, forced Athena to get up.
She hated living with her parents. After all, she was thirty-four years old. Having been fired again, though, she had no alternative but to leave her own cozy apartment and return to their cramped one.
For almost ten years, she had been living on her own. Right after finishing her studies at the University of Fine Arts, she got a small downtown apartment and though she enjoyed her freedom and complete independence, she had to struggle to maintain her lifestyle. It’s not easy to win a fight, however, when the enemy is your own self. She was anxious about her future, unwilling to spend the rest of her life depending on her parents’ support. Having to rely on somebody else again was killing her; even if that someone was her own parents.

She went into the kitchen for some coffee. Her mother was busy cooking while her father was sitting at the table reading his morning paper. Retired now, he spent most of his time at home, unless he was going fishing; his favourite pastime ever since his retirement, though sometimes it seemed more like an obsession. What else could you call it when he frequently drove a hundred kilometres, just to go to a place where he knew a certain type of fish was to be found?
Athena sat beside him and asked if she could borrow his newspaper for a look at the classified ads. He handed it over and she flipped through the pages.
