Friday Harbor, a picturesque small town in the Pacific Northwest, and a haven for fishermen and yachtsmen. For Skye Dunbar, it is a place where she can overcome the pain of a broken heart and put her life back together. Renting a cabin by the shore, the last thing she expects is to be accused of computer hacking.
Jedediah Walker is investigating the dead marine life washed up on the island’s beaches. When he discovers the fish contain a high concentration of toxic chemicals, he suspects someone is deliberately dumping them in Puget Sound. Swift to jump to conclusions, he suspects the auburn-haired woman renting his cabin is somehow involved.
Skye tries to ignore him, but necessity throws them together as they struggle to find those responsible for the environmental atrocity.

Skye Dunbar stood by her kitchen window and waited for the transatlantic phone call to connect. She was going back. Back to try to make sense of the biggest heartbreak of her life. Foolish, she knew, but she needed some type of closure.
She gazed at the meadow beyond her home. After the heavy rain this weekend, everything looked grey, wet, and cold, cold as the heart that beat inside her breast.
The phone rang and rang. Was she calling too early? She glanced at her watch and calculated the eight-hour time difference between London and San Francisco. She hoped she wouldn’t wake Debbie. Her friend would be irritated when she learned that Skye was planning a trip to Seattle instead of visiting her.
After a while, a sleepy American voice answered.
‘Hello?’
‘Debbie? Did I wake you?’
‘Not really. I was lying here thinking about getting up. Talk to me, Skye. You sound anxious.’
Skye took a deep breath. ‘I’ve decided to take a month’s sabbatical. I’ve contacted British Airways and have an option on a flight leaving in a week’s time. They’re holding it for twenty-four hours.’
‘Why, that’s great. You need to get away, and you love San Francisco.’
‘Actually, Debbie, that’s why I’m calling. I’m not flying to San Francisco. I’m going to Seattle.’
‘Skye, you can’t possibly want to spend a month there, not after all that happened last year.’
