They accept the job ignoring that they are going to leave for a strange new world, where they will experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Walter e la sua banda erano il terrore dei Navigli. Nel labirinto della fantasia disegnato dai vicoli e dalle piazze del quartiere vecchio, dove la polizia non entrava e da dove i disperati non potevano scappare, la banda attraversava la giornata con espedienti squallidi, monotoni e disonesti. Il loro stile rissoso aveva un sapore d’altri tempi, di quando a Milano saliva fredda e umida la scighera(1), ma a Walter piaceva così, e anche quella sera d’inverno se ne andava a passeggio a testa alta, in cerca di avventure, accompagnato dai fratelli Lanciani di Como: due energumeni alti un paio di metri, fronte sfuggente e mani che sembravano ferri da stiro. Il resto della banda era composto da Marco – detto il Droghiere – che vantava una formidabile esperienza nel taglio e spaccio di sostanze stupefacenti, e dal Costantino, che di mestiere faceva il prestinaio ed era l’unico della compagnia a portare avanti un’attività ordinaria.
Intorno a mezzanotte i cinque fecero capolino in un pub sull’alzaia con la chiara intenzione di rimorchiare qualche ragazza. Presero posizione intorno a un tavolaccio di legno e iniziarono ad allungare le mani sulle cameriere, senza successo. Allora, passarono alle sciarade bevendo e sghignazzando finché li interruppe una voce in falsetto proveniente da dietro le spalle di Walter:
– Scusate, avrei una domanda…
Eh? Cosa? Tutti tranne Walter alzarono lo sguardo stupefatti, perché non riuscivano nemmeno a ricordare l’ultima volta che qualcuno avesse rivolto loro la parola. Quattro paia di occhi misero a fuoco un tizio esile dagli occhi scintillanti e i modi affettati, accompagnato da un bestione che indossava un casco nero e una tuta da motociclista.
