Genre: LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES / Composition & Creative WritingI self published this book in January 2019, while sales have been okay, I see the biggest potential for it in non-English speaking countries where people want to become freelance writers or even begin writing for English speaking publications.
This chapter is going to focus on helping you figure out what type of writing you’d like to do and how you can quickly build a portfolio.
I’ll help you decide if you’re going to specialize in one particular area or be more of an all-around freelance writer.
Let me start by saying there are some advantages and disadvantages to both.
Advantages to specializing in one area-
You get to be seen as more of an expert which usually leads to more assignments.
If it’s a topic you enjoy writing about it, you’re going to have fun.
You sometimes become an editor’s go to person when they’re looking for a writer for an upcoming piece.
Disadvantages
You don’t build experience in areas where assignments might be more available (especially if you select a narrow field)
Sometimes editors of magazines covering other topics besides your specialty, are reluctant to assign you articles because they think you don’t have enough experience or even interest in that topic.
Being an all-around freelance writer does have its pluses which include-
All magazines are fair game because you’ve got experience on all topics.
You might find an area of interest that you enjoy and become specialized.
It’s a better way to ease yourself into the business because you’re able to take any assignments that comes your way.
