A Life Interrupted
Jazmin never did grow up. Of Miss Deborah’s eight children, she was the one who caused the most pain…the most disappointment. Josiah is a civics teacher; Marvin a chiropractor; Katrina a public relations manager and so on. The eldest of Miss Deborah’s clan is Mariette, a registered nurse. Mariette has been married for twenty-five years to Eugene, who works as a maintenance supervisor. The couple has three children of their own, but also takes care of Jazmin’s 12-year-old son Riley. He loves Mariette and used to call her Auntie; however, through the years Riley gradually began referring to her as Mama. It sounds natural because she has cared for him since the age of three.
Now at the age of twelve Riley understands even less about Jazmin, his biological mother. It has become harder for Mariette and Eugene to answer questions: Why doesn’t she love me like you do? What’s wrong with Jazmin? How come she never wanted me to live with her?
