Joseph was seventeen years old when he fed the flock of sheep and goats with his brothers. He was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, Jacob’s other wives children, and Joseph often reported to his father their wrongdoings in the fields. Jacob who was given the name Israel by the angel of the Lord loved Joseph more than all his other sons because he was the son he got when he was quite old: and he made him a coat of many colors.
When his other brothers saw him in the coat and knew that his father had loved him more than them, they hated him, and couldn’t speak to him in peace. Joseph went to sleep and he had a dream, and told his family. So he said to them, “Please listen to this dream that I have gotten. We were taking up sheaves in the field, and my sheaf stood up, and your sheaves bowed down to mine.”
But his brothers answered him, “Do you think you’ll reign over us? Or do you think you’ll have dominion over us?”
His brothers even hated him more because of the dreams, and his good words. And he got another dream as he slept, and when he got up he told his brothers. And he said to them, “In my dream I saw the sun, moon, and eleven stars, and they all bowed before me.”
When his father heard it, he said to him, “What kind of dream is this? Will your mother, brothers, and father bow before you?”
His brothers envied him for his dreams and good behavior, but his father pondered them. Joseph’s brothers went to feed the sheep in the land of Shechem.
