I consider my career as translator as continuation of my work as teacher and scientist. In future I am planning to translate mainly popular or academic science books. I think that am uniquely qualified for this work, because I have worked as scientist and taught science and mathematics.
After I study of chemistry, I worked as scientist in Germany, the USA and Australia. My field of research was biochemistry and cell biology. Then I worked as teacher at Australian high school. Therefore, I am very familiar with the way science is done and the scientific language. I have always kept myself informed about the latest developments in science and mathematics. I am an avid and indiscriminate reader of books about science and keep subscriptions to “Scientific American” and “New Scientist”. Podcasts and you-tube videos complement my reading.
I have now lived and worked for many years in Australia. Therefore, I am very familiar with written as well as colloquial English. Extensive reading of science fiction and crime novels has also familiarized me with the idioms of other forms of English.
Through contact to my family and friends in Germany, I maintained my practice of the German language. I also read German books and follow German news.
In summary, I think that my qualifications, life experience and ability to adapt to change will allow me to be successful as translator.
