My name is Sybila Canobra, and I’ve worked as a certified translator in Chile for 15 years now. Let me tell you a little bit about me. Even though I was born in Santiago, I was raised in Venezuela and attended a French school there. My major was Literature and Philosophy. After 15 years, we moved back to Chile where I finished high school and decided to go to translation school. After completing my training, I worked for a wide range of organizations and corporations. Even though I am a naturally curious person, I was not too fond of specializing in mining, or legal or economic translation. Even though I really think that kind of knowledge is crucial to understand how the world works, I really felt something was missing. As years passed and I continued taking technical projects and started teaching translation at a local university, I still had the feeling that something was missing. I loved my job but I came to a point where it was starting to become a little mechanical.

One day, a friend of mine called to tell me there was a film director looking for someone to translate the script of the movie he was working on into English. He wanted to show his work at an international film festival that year. I accepted the challenge. It took me literally two minutes to really start enjoying that project. I found that challenge absolutely thrilling as it was the first time translating a document had creativity involved! Two months after completing the project, the director called to tell me how happy he was with the results he achieved at the film festival: “Thank you for helping me do this”, he said. Those words made me feel rewarded. “This is what I want to do” I thought.  “I want to help people who have something to say, reach this part of the world”.
