I am a professor of world literature, writer and adventurer.
My story is about a woman from a small patriarchal Balkan country, who, in 2011, in her 40s decided to leave her comfort zone in order to cycle around the world, with almost no experience and with a $6 daily budget. I went with a companion and partner I barely knew. In the first year of travel, everything that could go wrong did go wrong: my partner left me in Turkey, then I was left without any source of income and my cheap camping equipment was completely destroyed in a storm in Georgia. Everyone thought I was going to give up, many people hoped that I would admit defeat, but I continued by myself - and today, seven years later, I'm still on my Way. In the meantime my travel has turned into my (nomadic) way of life.
So far, I have made over 30,000 miles by bicycle and have visited over 40 countries. Thousands of people from the former Yugoslavia follow me on social media. I have media popularity, I publish books, give speeches and inspire many people, primarily women, to do something for themselves and their lives - to follow their dreams, without fear of failure, or disapproval of their patriarchal environment.
Nevertheless, the most important thing is my mission: to share real stories about all good people I have met out there, who have helped me without any interest. They have given me food and sometimes money, offered accommodation, let me in their lives, shared their love with me, helped me in difficult situations... Without all of them, I would never have succeed. My own experience is the best proof that the world is a good place – much better than the media usually shows.
