After completing my Bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in the US in 1985, I began travelling abroad and spent many years as a ski bum, exploring Europe by bicycle and tent, and working at a variety of odd and eclectic jobs. In 1992 I studied at Vienna's School of Poetry with the writer Gordon Lish and began performing/reading my work publicly. In 1993 I completed my Masters in International Relations at the University of Amsterdam and in 1997 my PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna. My PhD thesis has been published as the book: Feminist International Relations: The Construction of World Pictures & Fish Stories, and several of my poems and essays have been published in a variety of magazines including Art in Migration, Vienna.
Simultaneous to my studies, I was a founding member of the band Gysm Kitchun, which performed frequently in Vienna, and also a member of Labyrinth, Vienna's English language poetry group, which also gave readings on a regular basis and published a journal. In 1999 I founded "Dream Coordination Office" together with Charlotte Eckler, which began with a series of art projects/installations and eventually turned into our translation business.
Since 1999 I have worked as a professional translator, editor, and proofreader in a variety of fields. My work has included children's books, artists' books, art catalogues, short stories, academic texts, architecture books (including: Get off of my Cloud; by Wolf Prix of Coop Himmelblau), subtitles for films, and a book on the pleasure principle in culture by the philosopher Robert Pfaller. I work most frequently for the publishing houses Scheidegger & Spiess and Park Books in Zurich.
I still embark on long bike tours (i.e., from Vienna to Odessa; from my hometown of Moultonborough, New Hampshire to Labrador; or down the west coast of the US from Seattle to San Diego) and work as a bike guide for triathletes at a training camp on the island of Mallorca, Spain. In addition to participating in various triathlons, running competitions (including mountain marathons), I am also an avid masters swimmer as a member of Vienna's Jewish sports club, Hakaoh. I have represented Hakoah at several European and World championships, most recently in Montreal, where I met the 80-year-old swimmer Ingrid Keusch-Renner from Bochum whose biography I have just completed (publication forthcoming).
I am currently working on a translation of short stories by Wolfgang Eigensinn, a self-named "street poet" who makes his living by peddling his work (either as copies or typed originals) throughout the city.
For many years I taught a course at the University of Vienna for professors who teach, write, or present in English, Fine Tuning: A Workshop in English. Currently I teach a course at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Writing and Speaking about Art.
When I am not traveling, I am at home in Vienna, Austria, Düsseldorf, Germany, and Moultonborough, New Hampshire.
