Prevention is better than cure - A message from the past becoming increasingly relevant in today's world
- Academic and professional career – In few words: medical doctor in 1970, researcher from 1972, professor from 1982 (Universities of Pavia and Modena, Italy), retired in November 2015. I have been engaged in diagnosis of occupational diseases and in their prevention. I taught occupational health/occupational medicine to medical students and other health professionals for over 40 years. Currently, I am an emeritus fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini and a honorary fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.
- Scientific research - My research activity is documented by a number of scientific papers. Details can be found on Research Gate and Google Scholar. Although most papers are not of great interest for a translator, a few of them are consistent with the topic to translate. In fact, as a scholar of occupational medicine, I was deeply interested in the figure of a visionary scientist living three centuries ago (Bernardino Ramazzini) and I wrote several papers published in prestigious scientific journals.
- Editorial activity – Excluding some minor works published in the past (including the hypertext What do you do for a living), in 2015 I co-edited the 2-volume treatise of occupational medicine (Trattato di medicina del lavoro) intended to be used by occupational medicine students and professionals. In 2015 I published a book (ebook and paper version), containing a comprehensive view of the thinking of Ramazzini, whose contribution is highly valued throughout the medical world. A more comprehensive English version appeared in 2020. It explores Ramazzini’s works by revisiting his thinking in a contemporary way, highlighting the modernity of his reflections and focusing on his visionary ideas.
