Where the Children of Wind Once Danced by C.J. Pearson

Book One of the Cordysian Chronicles Trilogy

The first book in the Cordysian Chronicles series.

Where the children of wind once danced

The realm of New Sylestia had enjoyed a thousand years of peace, protected by a powerful Sequestering spell. But the harmony that had once existed between Elf and Human society is now threatened from within, and Lorewyn, an Elven archer and war heroine haunted by her own past, is caught between her heritage and loyalty to her most beloved friend... and fighting for her Human neighbors and a higher cause. Painful decisions are made, and Lorewyn finds herself the last of her kind, with new allies, now trying to desperately defend her unshielded home from a dark enemy recently returned, and trying to protect the future of a people from a race other than her own. So begins the Cordysian Chronicles, and introduces a trilogy filled with epic fantasy, passion, triumph, and loss. The adventures continue in Two Flew at Midnight (Book II) and Knights of the Faerie Blade (Book III).

Taryk grabbed the second full quiver on his back.  He threw it to Lorewyn but took his eyes away from the battle just long enough for an Ork lance to impale his horse.  The beast whinnied in pain as it dropped on its side.  Taryk’s foot got caught in the stirrup and he couldn’t jump off in time.  He got pinned beneath.  An Ork was on him a second later.

“No!”  Lorewyn yelled and nocked an arrow from the fresh quiver as fast as she could.  She sent an arrow streaming toward the Ork’s head just as the foul enemy drove his lance through Taryk’s chest.

Horrified, Lorewyn screamed with rage.  With a couple of springing strides, she was on top of the fallen horse’s body.  The Ork who had felled the young Constable was now lying dead beside him, an arrow through his skull.  Taryk was no longer moving, blood gushing from his chest.  Lorewyn saw another two Orks rush toward her.  She fired two arrows.  Both Orks were struck in the chest and fell.

There was another sound coming from the north.  As expected, the Orks who had been on the other summit were advancing.  Aldryk had broken through the main Ork lines.  A handful now approached.  He threw his spear mightily, taking one down. He ran toward the remaining Orks with his axe as he let out a war cry.

Another blast of spellfire came from above.  It hit a group of Orks not far from where Lorewyn was positioned.   She leapt back to avoid getting caught in the effect.  She regained her footing and took down the three Orks who were in the radius of the blast.  As Lorewyn was about to rush over to help Aldryk, the Barbarian leader took an Ork lance in the back and fell.
