Harry stands across the street, arms crossed over his chest, repeatedly reading the banner over the corner shop he’s about to enter. Green Bean. A stable job. A daytime job. He’s not sure that exchanging his generous tips in the bar for possibly no tip at all in a coffee shop is a clever idea, but he’s excited to exchange the smell of booze and vomit for freshly grounded coffee and vanilla muffins. He’s also looking forward to sleeping an entire night. It’s going to be harder, but he’s ready to take that step.
He takes a deep breath, pushing the sleeves of his white tee-shirt over his hands. Despite the dry weather of June, he’s decided that hiding his tattoos with long sleeves is the best approach. When he pushes the shop’s red door open, he’s immediately greeted by the warmth of baked goods and hot beverages.
He walks slowly among the geometric tables and unmatched chairs, noticing how the uniqueness of the furniture gives the place a personality of its own. He stops at the counter, being mistaken for a customer by the tall, brunette attendant on the other side. Her round brown eyes widen when he informs he’s there for the barista position - which has been open for months. According to Guido, his new boss, mixing coffee can’t be too different from mixing alcohol. Harry sure hoped so.
“Harry!” The old Italian man appears from a door in the back. “I’m glad you’re here. Come in!” His accent is thick, and his voice is gravelly.
He leads the way to the staff room - a hot, claustrophobic office with no windows, blue steel cabinets lined up against the walls and two wooden benches. He shows him which one will be his locker, handing him a key and a brand new white apron, sporting the shop’s logo over the chest. He also gives him a hair net, so he can keep his long, curly locks away from people’s drinks.
