Unearthing my irish roots

My father Matteo was adopted. We did not know that until we were teenagers. We were told that Giuseppe Tallo was his biological father and an Irish woman was the biological mother. My father hated the Irish and would never admit that he had some Irish blood. My father abhorred that his biological mother was Irish.

Christmas 2019, I received an Ancestry DNA kit as a gift from my husband. The results were shocking. I learned that my father was 100% Irish. After tracing the line through my DNA matches, I found I had a first cousin who lives in New Jersey.  Upon contacting her, it was confirmed that her father was my father's half-brother. I was able to determine his biological parents were James Scanlon of South Scranton and Catherine Quinn of Dunmore.

There were also hundreds of DNA matches from one area, County Mayo, Connacht Ireland. First, second and third cousins! I still have further discovery to do and resolution to perform regarding my Irish family. Now I know I have a Gaelic blood line, that goes back hundreds of years.

I was able to travel to Alberobello and meet my Italian relatives in 2002. I hope someday to be able to travel to County Mayo and meet my Irish relatives.

He was born in Sligo County Mayo Ireland. Mayo is the third largest county in Ireland. The Atlantic Ocean borders the north and west of the county, while the counties of Sligo and Roscommon lie to the east and Galway lies to the south.
