Baker Johnson is a psychical researcher, demonologist and exorcist living in 1930s New York City. Brilliant but deeply flawed, Baker has an otherworldly perception that allows him to read people with but a glance. In "Things the Dark has Always Held", Baker is approached by a dangerous mobster known as Johnny Stücke. Baker's black room, a place where haunted items are cataloged and kept, holds an ancient item that Stücke is determined to possess. Baker is introduced to the secret society known as the Night Things. And he may be the only thing standing between the world of man and the most dangerous threat it has ever known.
Genre: FICTION / HorrorBaker Johnson is a popular horror character in the US and his tales have been enjoyed by thousands of readers. This tales combines two of my most popular properties: NIGHT THINGSand THE BAKER JOHNSON TALES.
Baker stood at Stücke's desk. He pointed the kopis defiantly at the fiend and pitched a burlap sack on to the desk.
Stücke opened the bag and peered down at a severed head that screamed silently. Its fangs carried a protest to nowhere.
"Eight was a bit heavy to carry such a distance," Baker bragged.
Stücke merely nodded and motioned to a cigar box. "May I?"
Baker looked incredulously at him. "Really?"
"We need to discuss things, and it calms my nerves."
"Then go ahead. But understand it'll be your last if you provoke me."
Stücke took a cigar from the box, bit its flank off and spit it into a corner. He then lit it with an expensive desk lighter. He took a deep draw from it. "Many years ago, an old friend told me that the only thing that separates a man from a beast is a good cigar. I agree."
"What are you, Stücke?" Baker said.
Stücke took another drag before answering. "I come from a race few humans know. We are called the Night Things. Some of us are born. Others are created. But there is one thing we all have in common, Baker Johnson. We all hunger."
