The tired Fiesta hit a small rock on the kerb and came to an unexpected and abrupt stop. Erica switched off the engine and stepped outside. This was deepest countryside, something that the Londoner had not seen for years and certainly hadn’t missed. Poor phone reception, miles to the next supermarket, cigarette supply and bottle of bubbly – that’s what this was to her.  She searched her purse for the map of the territory which her assistant Hilda had drawn for her. There was the small trodden path at the foot of the hill, the two opposing gates to a field with horses and one with sheep. All the road junctions she had come to since leaving the B&B not far from here had been easy to recognise and here was the little shoulder by the side of the road, where Hilda had recommended Erica should park the car.
The tricky part, Hilda had explained, was finding the somewhat hidden gate which would lead her to the man himself, but Hilda didn’t have pancreatic cancer and possibly water in her lung, she was not recovering from the latest course of chemo and so she had no idea how hard it would be for Erica to walk up that hill.
Erica looked at herself in the rear mirror of her Fiesta before getting ready to face the man. Her hair had not fallen out from the chemo but it had turned grey and made her look much older than she was. There were wrinkles in her face despite the swollen face – it really wasn’t fair; the worst of both worlds.
The prospect of the climb in her poor physical condition was far from comforting.
She desperately hoped the trip here was worth it. If the man really was who Hilda thought, there was a slight chance for her. If she could make him speak to her she was sure she could persuade him to help- if he still possessed those powers. Those were a lot of ifs.
