Your Stay in the Hospital

The sleeve gastrectomy takes about one to two or more hours. The procedure tends to be shorter if your surgeon is experienced; it is longer if you have an open gastrectomy instead of a laparoscopic one or if there are complications. You’ll wake up about an hour or so after the procedure’s finished and be closely monitored for a few hours. Next, you’ll likely go to your hospital room where you’ll be cared for by one or more nurses until you leave the hospital. Within days, you’ll get to go home and recover!

Fully Regaining Your Consciousness as the Anesthesia Wears Off

The anesthesia will wear off, and you’ll wake up about an hour or two after the surgeon has finished working on you. You probably won’t remember much over the next few hours because you’ll still be groggy from surgery. There’ll be a lot of nurses bustling around, but you don’t need to worry about anything.
