The prostitute beckoned to him, enticing him with sensual glances to taste the delights that she had to offer. A veil obscured her features, but those eyes… there was something familiar about those eyes. He knew she was toying with him. Luring a Pharisee to her bed—a member of the Sanhedrin no less—would be profitable to a harlot in more ways than one. It would be a risky venture for them both, but one to which he knew that many of his compatriots had succumbed. He knew he was playing with fire, but he was mesmerized by those eyes—mesmerized, yet also put disturbingly ill at ease.
As he raised his hand to wave her away (or was it to summon her near?) he noticed a small red blotch on his arm with a whitish hair in the center. A sinister glint flashed in the prostitute’s eyes, and he could sense the wicked smile that crossed her lips beneath the veil. A wordless gasp escaped his throat.
“What’s the matter, Uncle? Has the rot got your tongue?”
The familiarity he had sensed in the harlot became instantly clear. Mary! Mary, it’s you. Oh, Mary, what have you done? What have I done?
Simon awoke with a scream. He bolted upright and gasped for air. A cold sweat drenched his body and panic raged through his mind. Frantically, he clawed at the malignancy on his arms, trying in desperation to tear it away—until he suddenly realized that his skin was clean and pure—that the leprosy which had putrefied his flesh and rotted away his body, mind, and soul was truly gone. And he began to weep.
It wasn’t the first time this nightmare had wrenched him from sleep into a waking horror. Doubtless, it wouldn’t be the last.
