Simon Ships Out by Jacky Donovan

How one brave, stray cat became a worldwide hero

True story of the world's first celebrity cat, narrated by him.

Simon ships out

When Simon, an orphaned young cat, is smuggled on board HMS Amethyst, his simple life amidst the streets of Hong Kong is transformed into an adventure fit for heroes.

Bringing joy and compassion to those on board, Simon is the only cat to have been awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, the highest honour for animal gallantry in wartime.

Based on the true events of Amethyst’s ‘Yangtze Incident’, Simon's quirky yet emotional cat’s eye narrative is sure to move and entertain all who read it.

Prologue

I am curled up next to JoJo and telling him I have nine. He is laughing and saying I only have one. I can feel his heart thudding, thudding. I can hear it too, really hear it. His beating heart gets louder and louder until suddenly his heart must burst because - bang! I am jolted right off the bed and onto the floor.

All the others must hear it too because they spring up out of their beds. What is this? I dash out onto the deck and run up to the bow. Huge, scary flies are whizzing over my head and hitting the ship. I scamper up onto the bridge to try and escape them. The Captain is in there, Conway and Welburn at the wheel.

‘I do believe someone’s firing at us.’ The Captain looks and sounds surprised. ‘Action stations. Raise the battle ensign,’ he barks and some of the men leap over me and quickly rush away. A horrible sound echoes all around the ship; the loudest, saddest wail I have ever heard. It makes my whole body shake and hurts my ears, my head. Make it stop.

Another huge bang and crash and I am thrown right across the bridge. I try to stand up, but I can’t. Even though I can put my front paws onto the floor, my back legs don’t move. Everything underneath me has tilted and there is thick, black smoke coming in from outside. It gets up my nose and makes my eyes sting. There is a screaming noise between my ears. I shake my head and try to stand. It is getting darker, hotter. There is a nasty, burning smell too. I cannot see or hear. It is hard to even breathe. I sit hunched; my whiskers, my ears, my fur, everything is standing on end.
