He stopped in his tracks when he sensed movement. A young girl sat on the porch holding a large red chicken. She seemed to be crying. Her shoulders shook and she swiped at her face. She held the chicken against her body and slowly stroked the hen. The chicken didn’t seem to mind the attention. From her torn jean overalls and long ponytail, he pegged her to be in her early twenties. She probably wouldn’t want to be caught crying.
He started to back up and felt his leg begin to buckle. He grabbed the siding for support and that slight sound disturbed the chickens. The two on the ground took off running like bats out of hell and the red one fluttered its wings. The girl gently lowered it to the ground.
She quickly turned toward him and stared for a moment before she asked, “Can I help you?”
“No. Sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you. I shouldn’t have wandered back here.”
“It’s okay. People are understandably curious. Is there something I can help you with?” she asked and stood up.
