This technique is often overlooked, but is one of the most powerful tools in your lucid dream arsenal. Keep a notebook or a journal near your bed. You may want to type on a computer if that is easier. When you wake, immediately begin writing what you remember. Try to write down at least one dream every morning.
When we wake from dreams, we often quickly forget that we had been dreaming at all. If you start focusing on remembering and linking dream details, the actual dream content will be recalled to your mind. Be patient, it may take several minutes of blank thought. After some effort, the dream will come back to you, and you will be able to write out lots of detail in many cases.
This technique is effective because it establishes pattern recognition and familiarity with the dream state. You will notice “dream signs” and other common themes in your dream states. When you write these out consistently, you will develop your ability to distinguish between the dream state and the waking state. When in the dream state, you will begin to lucid dream the moment you become aware of the “dream signs” that indicate you are dreaming.
