What is Ketosis?
Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When your body doesn’t have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fat; which result in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body. Ketones, also known as “Ketones bodies,” are byproducts of the body breaking down fat for energy that occurs when carbohydrate intake is low.
Some people encourage ketosis by following a diet called the Ketogenic or low-carb diet. The primarily purpose of the diet is to try and burn unwanted fat by forcing the body to rely on fat for energy, rather than carbohydrates. Most people engage glucose as their only source of energy which often leads to fat-related weight gains and other health complications in the long run.
Ketosis is commonly observed in patients with diabetes, as the process can occur if the body does not have enough insulin or is not using insulin correctly. The problems associated with extreme levels of ketosis are more likely to develop in patients with type 1 diabetes compared with type 2 diabetes patients.
The end product of fat burning is a profound energy level that is greater than what is derived from burning carbohydrate as a primary source of energy. From the onset, the human physiology was designed to exist on ketones. For several thousands of years, this was how we lived before the introduction of high carb meals and sugar to our staples.
When you avoid consuming glucose or sugar for 10-12 hours, there is a production of ketones in the body, which break down body fats, and this process is known as beta-oxidation. This process can be reversed with the re-introduction of high carbs meals. Major and minor ketones in the blood or urine can be tested using strips or glucometer, which you can purchased from the drug stores.
Glucose can either be used to fuel the body or be stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.
