As soon as the bell rang, I hurried out of the classroom, keen to escape Sara’s death stare and her threatening gestures. But I knew her secret. And it was time to take advantage of that. When she stormed past me, I returned her glare. I had to stand up to her, to let her know that I wasn’t afraid.
Momentarily brushing my concerns over Sara aside, I looked back into the interior of the classroom and saw Blake heading my way. It was my chance to talk to him, to make things right between us. However, a sudden grip on my arm caused me to whip around. Thinking it was Sara, I was ready to let her have it, right in front of everyone.
Instead of that evil girl, I found the worried face of Becky staring back. “Julia, I have to show you something.” Her insistent tone, as well as her firm grip, immediately caught my attention.
Blake was approaching the doorway, and I hesitated. “Becky, I can’t right now,” I mumbled, trying to shake her hand away.
“You have to!” She gripped tighter to my arm and dragged me along the corridor.
I sighed in exasperation as she pushed open the door of the girls’ bathroom.
Frustrated at missing my chance to talk to Blake, I shrugged at her in annoyance. “What is it? What do you need to show me?”
She moved towards the middle cubicle and nudged open the door. “Look!”
My stomach filled with dread as I stood alongside her. Instinctively, I knew that what she’d discovered would have an impact on me. But I wasn’t prepared for what stared back. When my eyes fell upon the markings on the wall, my mouth dropped open in horror.
