I opened my eyes and blinked. Bright lights shone down from the ceiling, but it was the myriad of concerned faces staring back that bothered me. I licked at my dry lips and tried to sit up. The hazy fog in my head persisted, and the room started to spin once more.
“Emmie? Emmie... lay still. Just stay where you are.” Rhonda’s distinct voice rang in my ear, and I felt a cool hand brushing the hair from my face.
I blinked my eyes open once again, and this time, her face was clearer. I tried to swallow, but my parched throat made it difficult to do so.
Sienna’s voice sounded in the background. “Is she okay?”
“I think she fainted,” Rhonda replied. Her brow was creased with worry as she mopped my forehead with a damp cloth. The cooling sensation was heavenly against my hot skin. “Take some deep breaths, Emmie. I’m going to lift your legs a little to improve the blood flow to your brain.”
I nodded slightly as she pushed some cushions beneath my lower legs, raising them in the air. I glanced around me. Several strange faces peered down.
Sprawled on the floor at the entrance to Eliza’s, while shoppers wandered past and stared, I was overcome with embarrassment. I felt like a freak show on display for the world to see. Pushing myself into a sitting position, I ignored Rhonda’s protests to stay where I was.
Sienna passed me a glass of water which I gulped down gratefully before getting to my feet. I could hear cheering from the center of the mall, and I recalled that The Voice finalist was scheduled to perform. Thankfully the majority of the crowd was congregated in that spot.
Sienna led me into the office to sit down and collect myself. As I slumped into Rhonda’s office chair, a vision of Chloe’s fear-filled expression came scurrying back, causing goosebumps to ripple over my skin.
