"I need to use the loo," Baker said, standing uneasily. Sherman left his seat and moved for Baker.

Baker walked clumsily down the car aisle, grasping seats and marching like a drunkard through heavy wet sand.  While he was up, he fancied a trip to the dining car, as well. A brandy would help settle his stomach.

Suddenly, the train bucked. As if the machine were in a sudden panic, Baker heard the distressed harmony of the metal wheels as they grinded against the rails. He fell and rolled toward the front of the car. He gathered his wits and stood as the train stopped dead. The passengers noisily spoke their concerns and glanced through the windows. Baker spotted Sherman, who was standing and calling out to him.

The train grew dark. The windows blackened slowly, as if a sudden solar eclipse were brewing. The train began to rock. Ashen, fanged faces appeared at the windows on both sides of the train. The passengers screamed and surged toward the center aisle. Baker was caught in the panic. He struggled madly against the weight of the frightened  travelers. He could no longer see Sherman through the mob.

The black-eyed fiends at the windows began to smash their arms inside. They snarled and hissed and reached for the passengers. Then a cacophonous howl shook the world. The creatures withdrew quickly. All was still for a long time. Sherman had managed to fight his way to Baker.

"What are those things?" Sherman demanded, terrified.

"I don't know," Baker confessed.

Large, grey tentacles blasted through the compromised train windows. They began to wrap themselves around the shocked commuters. One tightened around Sherman's throat and then pulled away quickly, decapitating Baker's friend.
