Claymore by Jimm Grogan

Despite the approach of dangerous invaders, the civil war on Azten rages on. A lawyer turned government agent works to destroy the powerful enemy—but quickly finds himself their target.

Claymore

The fight for justice never ends—and as four-armed navino lawyer Claymore is about to learn, no one can be trusted to do what’s right. So, he decides to take on the organized criminals infiltrating his beloved government, even if he must do it alone.

After the abduction of his niece, Shaylor, Claymore begins investigating a shady organization known only as Prong Three. Following the trail of corruption and kidnapping, he discovers that his target is just one small arm of a major operation called Trident—and that taking it on means risking everything, including his own life and freedom.

Behind it all is the one known as Master, whose grand plans lead to a full-on civil war between Trident and the official government. Both sides are working under pressure. If they can’t find a compromise soon, their chances of defeating the much more powerful alien force preparing to invade are slim.

Claymore must figure out how to stop Trident, but the criminals’ top leadership is already tracking him. Together with government agents—and any allies he can find—Claymore must disrupt their advanced technology while evading capture.

If they find him, it will be too late.

Sample text:

“Due,” I said. I spoke softly and put my head beside hers to try to create a psychological closeness, intimacy, and trust. It often worked on my clients. “Due, I should have told you, but then Phee would have tried to stop me. Nevertheless, you deserved to have some input beforehand. I apologize.”

After I said it, I decided it was the truth. Her life was on the line, and she should have some control or choice in the matter. I waited for her to respond, but she didn’t. She touched her head against mine, but that didn’t seem to be a meaningful response.

“How about a noninvasive scan,” I said, “just to see if your bomb’s position and configuration is the same as Stea’s? That way, this debacle won’t be a complete waste.” After we got the information from the scan, I could determine whether it would be worth trying to persuade her to continue with the surgery. Due still didn’t respond. “I am not going to start scanning you without your permission. But I will still beg.”

“OK, scan me. So far I only give you permission to scan me.”

I lunged forward with the scanner and began the process of getting scans from multiple angles. In the tight quarters it proved awkward. At one point I was almost sitting on her instrument console. Due looked grumpy but healthy. She had a scar on her left cheek, but I didn’t dare ask her about it. I squeezed back into the back to inspect the readouts on my tablet.

“Your bomb does appear to match Stea’s, and it’s in the same place and configuration,” I said. “It looks exactly like the one I practiced the surgery on.”

Now I just needed to figure out how to convince her to let me do the surgery.
