Mike Burton stepped into the brilliant morning sunshine, squinting as he adjusted his eyes from the darker interior of his apartment building to the wide expanse of green, blue, and black before him. He noticed things like this now because he was glad to be alive. The last decade of his life was spent in a coma, where his muscles wasted and his body was monitored and kept alive despite the long odds against his recovery. One hell of a diet regime, he would tell people, but inwardly he wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. He was weak, tired, and in need of rebuilding his muscles and his life.

He felt the compression of the soles of his shoes under his weight as he stepped off the curb onto the almost oily black tarmacadam road. He imagined a similar compression in his bones as he moved up and down, left and right, swaying naturally in a practiced lope called walking. He didn’t have a swagger, but he was once athletic and intended to become so again. His body would just need to catch up.

“On your own today, Mike?” The building’s porter was friendly with all of the residents. He held his take-away coffee and a brown bag containing his morning bran muffin from Joey’s coffee shop around the corner.

“Yep. No more physio, but the docs say I need to stay active.”

“Take it easy out there.” The porter’s words were genuine as he walked past Mike and up the manicured sidewalk into the front entrance of the complex. He disappeared inside and Mike returned to his task.
