Mary chopped the carrots in front of her and ran over the words in her mind. She wanted to be ready to explain to her father exactly why she was ready to look for work.

‘Put the pot of potatoes over the fire,’ Mary told Ellen, pointing to the glimmering flames in the middle of the room.

Ellen was fourteen now, old enough to be cooking for the family. She sighed. ‘Can’t you do it? I’m waiting for someone.’ She was kneeling on the bench by the window, eyes fixed on the path that led up to their door.

Mary put the water on to boil herself and narrowed her eyes. ‘Who are you expecting? Have you invited over a guest? Did you ask Father’s permission?’ She didn’t want one of Ellen’s friends coming round and spoiling her chance to speak to him. He didn’t often join them for dinner, and he was in a good mood today, so it was the perfect opportunity.

‘Don’t worry, he knows,’ she giggled.

She added the carrots and once they were soft, she dished them out onto plates. Then she took the chicken out of the oven and used a sharp knife to carve it for them.

Ellen shrieked and ran over to look out of the window.

‘Will you keep it down?’ Mary asked.

‘He’s here,’ Ellen said.

A tall, slender man with a head full of dark hair was heading towards their small house.

‘Father? Are we having a guest for dinner?’

Their father emerged from his room yawning.

‘Father?’ Mary repeated.

He rubbed his eyes, just woken from a nap. ‘Well yes, young John Pannell will be joining us this evening. Didn’t I say?’
