Almost Paradise by Laurie Hanan

The first in the Louise Golden mystery series

Almost paradise

Mail carrier Louise Golden lives on the island of Oahu and enjoys a fiendly camaraderie with the people on her delivery route. When she notices Mrs. Santos missing from her home, Louise becomes concerned. As she questions neighbors in an attempt to learn what became of the elderly woman, Louise is pulled into a mystery involving abductions, car tails, a celebrity pool party, exotic dancing, smuggled Hawaiian artifacts and, of course, murder.

Sample text:

Mrs. Santos was in her eighties and lived alone. She managed well enough, but had been slowing down lately. Her mind seemed to get younger as her body aged. She never got mail from the daughter and grandchildren she said lived in California, but maybe they kept in touch by phone. Mrs. Santos didn’t get personal mail from anyone, not even at Christmas. I brought her extra catalogs or magazines that couldn’t be delivered and would otherwise be recycled. I knew I could lose my job for that, but it made her happy. Each Christmas, I gave her gifts I received from customers on my route. I got so many I didn’t know what to do with them, and I think they were the only gifts she ever got.

Could she have forgotten the time? I walked up the cracked driveway, through the open carport, and knocked on the front door. The house had no gutters and rain cascaded from the roof, splashing reddish brown mud onto the walkway and walls.

     “Mrs. Santos? Hello? Mrs. Santos?”

     There was no response.

“It’s Louise, your mail carrier. I have your mail.”
