Afghan warrior

Special Forces have played an extremely important role in the War in Afghanistan and none more so than the U.S. Navy SEALs. From the onset of the war in Afghanistan they have participated in many varied operations. Operation Anaconda being one such example of a deadly operation which saw SEALs fighting for their lives. Afghan Warrior takes you through some hard-fought encounters from the densely-packed warren of walled compounds that doubled neatly as enemy bunkers, lush orchards to high up in the rugged mountainous border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Fighting an enemy with years of experience of fighting occupying forces.

The U.S. Navy SEALS have spent the last ten years on a constant war footing going from war zone to war zone. Form Iraq to Afghanistan then back to Iraq and Syria, Libya and other hot spots around the word. The tempo since 9/11 for all Special Forces has stepped up exponentially as the Global War on Terror has gathered pace. None have been busier than the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group more commonly known as SEAL Team Six. Now famously known for Operation Neptune Spear, the raid Osama bin Laden’s hideout. Finally capturing and killing the allusive al Qaeda leader in 2011.

It was late 2011 in Afghanistan, we heard rifle and automatic gunfire along with the whizz of RPGs being fired in the late afternoon. The sounds of sporadic heavy dull explosions could be heard coming from the direction of a group of U’s.S Army Rangers on the outskirts of Asadabad. This is a mountainous region of the Hindu Kush Mountains about eight miles northwest of the Pakistani border.

We knew the U.S. Rangers were on a mission to locate a HVT (High Value Target) in that area. On hearing battle, I glanced over to team leader for the acknowledgment to get kitted up and ready to move out. With one nod, the team sprang into action, grabbing their body armour, helmets and M4 rifles knowing every second counted. A firefight can be over in a few minutes – friendly or tango run out of ammo, all tangos neutralized or one side has turned on its toes and got the hell out of the killing zone.

We ran to our vehicles from the rest area, which was just hard compacted earth with a few chairs and tables underneath a couple of trees. As we ran, we were still fastening up our body armour.
