Once upon a time, a Little Soul loved to play “Chutes & Ladders” with her dear friend Jesus in Heaven. When he told her about a wonderful adventure down on Earth, she became curious and wanted to go on such an exciting journey, too.
However, the thought of being alone in a strange world for so many years caused a queasy feeling in her stomach. To take away that fear, Jesus provided her with a wonderful companion to watch over her at every moment of her human life. A Guardian Angel.
And so, the adventure began ...
Author’s note: In a lovely way, this short story explains the connections between Heaven and Earth, and also between free will and consequences. It’s about soul mates, courage, and those special beings that we can only find in the silence within us.
Not long ago, a Little Soul sat on a fluffy cloud and passed the time away with a game of Chutes and Ladders. Tap, tap, tap, it went as she let the pebble in her hand hop across the board and eventually had to go back to the beginning because she landed on a chute.
“Hello there, are you playing all by yourself today?” a friendly voice above her asked, and she raised her head. Two eyes as bright as sapphires regarded her with the warmth of Heaven.
“Mm-hmm,” the Little Soul answered a bit bored and nodded. “Do you want to play?”
Smiling, her friend Jesus sat down and picked up a pebble. The two had played together many times before. Whether he let her win on purpose, or if it was really just coincidence, the Little Soul didn’t know. But she squeaked excitedly every time she reached the final ladder and was the first to cross the finish line.
Just when the two of them put their pebbles back to start the game again, movement at the very end of the cloud next to them drew her notice, and the Little Soul saw another shining soul coming through a golden gate. This one fell into a warm embrace of God. She sighed in exhaustion, leaning her head against His shoulder.
“Why is she so tired?” the Little Soul asked Jesus with a serious expression. It was the first time she saw the gate appear, and how anyone could be so exhausted in Heaven she didn’t understand at all.
“That’s because she has just returned from a long journey,” Jesus explained, without looking over his shoulder at the gate. He must have known exactly what was happening behind him.
“Where has she been for so long?” the Little Soul asked, curious now.
“She was down on Earth where she had some great adventures. Would you like to see?”
“Oh, yes, please!” she cried, happily clapping her hands.
