Hello.
My name is Talita and I´m a book lover. Ok, I´m a book fanatic. At the age of 29 I have a humble but adored collection of 498 books which are my greatest treasures.
I was born in Brazil and moved to the United States with my parents at the age of three. Growing up in a country with a rich cultural mix was fascinating and inspired me to learn about.. well, about anything and anyone different than me. I immersed myself in my studies and developed a fascination for languages and literature. By the time I was eleven, I had read more books than most college students, which earned me the nickname of “Belle“ among my friends and family (always with my nose in a book).
It got to a point where I would start reading a book in the morning and would finish at night, to everyone´s astonishment. I realized that reading interpretation comes easily to me, but not necessarily to everybody else. While it took 1 minute of my time to read 2 pages, it would take 5-10 minutes for my friends to read the same amount of text, especially friends that weren´t native English speakers. I observed that many collocations, idioms or even ideas weren’t completely understood by my peers, sometimes due to cultural differences or language knowledge.
As a native Brazilian growing up in the U.S.A, being alphabetized in English and learning my native Portuguese at home, while constantly hearing other languages in school and taking in different forms of writing, ideas and knowledge from countless books, I can comfortably say: I understand. I understand meanings, intentions and feelings. I understand how one group thinks and what they say and I understand how it will be interpreted by the other group. I understand, for example, how frustrating it is to tell a great joke or quote a great author and see that it made no sense whatsoever to someone that doesn’t have the same knowledge in the language.
Fast-forwarding a bit, in 2015 I returned to Brazil and was horrified. I witnessed a true assassination of the English language and one thing is certain.... it was traumatizing. I dedicated myself to teaching English in various schools and providing training to many businesses. I have worked with translations for private colleagues, schools and companies. But regardless of the type of work being done, it is my goal to portray the writer´s original ideas and thoughts without losing the essence of the language.
