お世話になります。私は、現在カリフォルニア州に住んでおり、在宅翻訳者として長年活躍しているリチャードと申します。
Hello, my name is Richard, I am currently living in California and have been working as a freelance translator for many years.
早速本題に入り、私事になりますが、異なった国々の人との間に立ち、文化・言語・交流などの面での橋渡しの役割を担うような活動に携わりたいという思いが、私が翻訳者になりたいと昔より願い始めた主なきっかけでした。
Getting right to the point, a little bit about myself: my desire to be involved in activities which play a role in creating bridges between people from different countries involving culture, language, communication, etc. has been my primary motivation for wanting to become a translator since long ago.
書籍翻訳の経験としましては、「浦上物語」と題した長崎被爆実相に関する小説の日英翻訳や、様々な依存症の治療などについての医療従事者向けの本一冊の英日翻訳を行なった経歴がございます。それぞれの本の翻訳者であったと同時に、翻訳完了後の訳文編集作業の担当者でもあったため、文章作成やライティング等の側面に関しても念入りに考慮しながら訳文の最終完成まで徹底的に作業を務めたという経験も積んでおります。
My book translation experience is as follows: 1. Japanese-to-English translation of a novel titled, "The Urakami Story" concerning the realities of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, 2. Translation of a book from English to Japanese for medical professionals regarding treatment for various addictions, etc. While serving as a translator for each of those books, I was also in charge of editing of those translations following their completion. As a result, I have also gained experience in carrying out thorough efforts to give elaborate consideration to aspects including writing and sentence composition right up until final completion of the translated edition.
書籍以外の翻訳ですが、日本からの最終帰国後、約6年前より日本にある翻訳会社からの医療方面の書類や、平和活動関連の資料、東日本大震災後の復活関連の資料などに関する翻訳依頼を引き受けてきた経験がございます。また、平成13年から平成21年にかけては広島市における長期滞在中、広島市の翻訳会社での勤務や、広島市役所の経済局での様々な資料の日英・英日翻訳といった経歴を持っております。
In terms of translation other than that involving books, for the past six years following my return to the U.S. from Japan I have had experience in translation including work from translation companies in Japan concerning medical documents, peace activity-related documents and documents regarding recovery efforts following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In addition, during my long-term stay in Hiroshima City, Japan from 2001 to 2009, I also had experience working at a Hiroshima City-based translation company and experience in translating various documents (Japanese-English, English-Japanese) at the Economic Department of Hiroshima City Hall.
I have also gained the following experience as a volunteer translator/activist: 1. Volunteer interpreting/translation for a previously existing international organization called, "Tabunka (multicultural) Kyosei (co-existence) Center" involved in promoting communication and cooperation between Japanese and foreign persons (languages I used then: Japanese, English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese), 2. Volunteer work at the lodging facility "Hiroshima Youth Hostel" (HYH) (which had existed for more than 50 years until a few years ago) involving interpreting at a monthly event for atomic bomb victims who spoke to foreign guests of their experiences with The Bomb (this included interpreting of Q & A sessions between victims and HYH guests) as well as written English translation of Japanese transcripts from recordings of those talks.
