I'm a German-speaking (foreign) language-lover, writer and former journalist from Switzerland who lived in the US for two years. Languages have accompanied me since I was child and until today it is my goal to work as a translator.

Hi there,

My name is Martina and I grew up in the beautiful country of Switzerland, where German, French, Italian and Romansh are the officially spoken national languages.

I myself grew up in the german part and started developing a love for languages at a very early age: When I was about 5 years old, I taught myself writing and a bit later, reading was my favorite thing to do.

Three years later, I was being taught French - in Swiss schools, it is mandatory for students to learn at least one of our national languages, in addition to their native one. I was totally fine with that, because I started liking French with its sounds and words.

In middle school, English and Italian were added, and I also started writing stories in German for fun. Furthermore, in commercial college - I was 15 years young - I chose Spanish as one of my elective subjects, while I kept studying al the previous mentioned languages. What can I say, I think there's no need anymore for me to say how much I adore languages...

After graduating, I got a job as a clerk, where I could only rarely make use of my linguistic skills. That was one of the reasons why a few years later, at 22, I became a journalist and wrote many different types of articles for Swiss magazines and Journals - every so often I got the chance to translate texts from English into German.

I liked my job, but over time, I realized that it was not enough for me anymore. I wanted to work with foreign languages on a daily basis and become fluent in at least one of them.

So I decided to move to the US and stay there as an au pair for one year. I was 25 back then. Well, I ended up living there for two years, as I fell in love with the American life, their culture, and, of course, their language.

When my host kids would be at school, I had time to let my creativity flow and wrote poems, reports, journals etc. (mainly for private use) and would soon start to write in English in order to improve my skills some more.

Going back to my home country was very difficult for me: not only have the US became a second home and my host family a second family by heart, but I was also afraid that I would loose my English fluency over time.

Therefore, I decided that I want to turn my great passion into my job and created this profile in order to set my first step into that direction.
