Afrikaans linguist and book lover

Language, reading, writing and books have always been close to my heart. That is why I decided to do a BA degree with Afrikaans-and-Dutch as one of my major subjects. After my studies, I started working as a Junior Journalist at a community newspaper, and I loved it!

I wrote articles in English and Afrikaans and I knew from the start that I was on the right career path. Since that year (1992), I worked as a journalist for a number of publications, the last of which was a community newspaper belonging to the Media24-group. By this time (2006 - 2011) I was a Senior Journalist writing anything from crime stories to human interest articles. After five years with Media24, I decided to resign, because, although I loved writing, hard news was not my forte. I wanted to become more involved in the book publishing industry.

I started my freelancing career at the end of 2011, working as a translator, editor and proofreader for a number of trade and educational publishers. From 2015 to 2017 I worked in-house as a Managing Editor, handling a wide range of educational titles from manuscript phase to print.

I have the experience and language background to do a good translation from English to Afrikaans, and I do believe that my studies in Afrikaans literature will certainly contribute to any fiction translation of mine being of excellent quality linguistically. I love stories, I love books and I would love to help you translate your brain child into Afrikaans. I am a lover of crime fiction and also of uplifting, empowering fiction for women. Furthermore, I have an interest in a wide range of subjects, so non-fiction titles relating to education, spirituality, business, self-help and gardening are but a few that I would feel comfortable taking on.

I also have an affinity for children's books – this includes ficion and non-fiction. I had already discovered this while my children were growing up, because I enjoyed reading to them almost more than they did listening! Ultimately I would love to write children's fiction myself. But for the moment I would be happy to contribute to making your children's book accessible to Afrikaans children everywhere.
