In 2016, I started to write a novel entitled “Spread Your Wings”, an historical romance set in Kansas in the early 1870s.
On completion, I spent several fruitless months submitting to literary agents in the U.K., most of whom were horrified, judging by their rejection e-mails, that I’d dared to write a novel set on a ranch in nineteenth century Kansas : apparently evoking images of mountain shoot-outs with the native American Indians, and dusty, unshaven cowboys bashing each other with chairs in bar-room brawls: ‘but nobody’s interested in Westerns nowadays’, they told me. Yes, some characters are indeed shot, but only as a means to continue the story and create the resulting romance between two people from quite different worlds.
I finally decided to self-publish with CreateSpace in order to sell copies in British bookshops, car-boot sales and markets here in Lanzarote where I live - a venture that has resulted in quite a measure of success. I’ve also sneaked copies into hotel libraries and restaurant waiting areas, simply to fulfil my enthusiasm of having my work read.
I published the book under the pseudonym of Billie Spencer, because at that time, I was also working on ideas to write a psychological thriller, and thought that it would be best to keep each genre independent of the other.
After the publication of 'Spread Your Wings', I immediately started to write the psychological thriller entitled 'Everybody Bleeds', a novel that one reviewer has classified as : ' A breath of fresh air in the thriller genre...At times tear-jerking, horrifying, wince-inducing, and gasp-worthy, the novel is a truly engaging, if sometimes, painful, read, with twists that continue through the final page. A solid and original thriller.'
At the moment, I am working on a collection of short stories, all with a twist, or two, in the tale, and a new full length novel about a killer who'd be insulted to be included in the 'serial killer' ilk.
