My name's Giulia Carla Bassani, I was born in Turin on January 1st, 1999.
At the moment I am attending the fifth year of the scientific high school at the Curie-Levi of Collegno. I chose this school because my interests and passions have always regarded scientific and naturalistic fields, in addition to my natural predisposition in learning foreign languages.
I have an excellent knowledge of the English language (First Certificate), both written and spoken. I have studied French for three years and the last year (2015/2016) I began a private course of the Russian language, that I am now continuing, for my personal interest.
I love reading and writing, indeed two years ago I finally managed to publish my first novel “Exardens”, a real-fantasy about the space adventures of a group of guys.
Through the high school’s years, studying physics, an already existing passion grew stronger inside me: space, its laws, research and space programs. I began to attend conferences held by astronauts and in this way I personally got to know eng. Maurzio Cheli, who accepted to be the guest of honor in a conference dedicated to space exploration, organized by me and a girl of my same age, at the auditorium Magnetto of Almese, on February 29th, 2016.
The last winter, I have been selected to participate in the ESO Astronomy Camp, held at the Observatory of Aosta Valley in Saint-Barthelemy (Nus) from December 26th, 2015, to January 1st, 2016. Among about 250 applications from many different states of the world, the chosen ones were 50. The main requirement to take part, in addition to a basis of scientific knowledge, was a good proficiency in English, the camp’s official language. Main theme of the camp was the research for the extrasolar planets, with lectures, observations, practical activities and data analysis.
In March 2016, I took part in the Odysseus II Space Contest making a team with one of my classmates, on the recommendation of my math and physics professor Tommaso Marino. We won the national phase and therefore took part in the regional semi-finals. With great happiness and satisfaction, we won the semi-finals as well and flew to Transinne (Euro Space Center, Belgium) to represent Italy in the European finals, among eight teams representing their own countries. For this contest we projected an autonomous space base on Mars and since then I have continued to study the Red Planet on my own. I’m now reaching the apex, writing a novel about the three first humans ever born on Mars, set in exactly that base that we had projected.
In September 2016, I was selected to take part in ESA’s Citizens Debate on Space for Europe, an event held at the same time in the 22 European member states of our Space Agency. In Italy, it was held in Rome and we discussed mostly about the policy and economy linked to the space field.
In the future, I will continue to follow my passion and my dreams. I will study aerospace engineering with the goal to be able to work, one day, in one of the big space agencies or related companies, in order to contribute to the research.
