A professional translator passionate about arts, travel and literature

Elise lignian

Ever since I was a child, I have loved writing stories and poems. This passion for words grew when I was in high school as I was studying Latin, English and Spanish. I then decided to combine my passion for writing with my love for language by undertaking translation studies at the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation (former School of International Interpreters) in the University of Mons, Belgium. My favourite class was unquestionably literary translation as it gave me the occasion to play with words in order to find the most perfect translation. After obtaining my master degree in 2011 and taking a life-changing four-month trip in India, I chose to further my learning by following a two-year training at the European Centre for Literary Translation in Brussels whilst beginning a career as a freelance translator. It is also at that time that I became involved in a project aiming at launching NISSA TV, a television channel dedicated to women's rights and gender equality in Euro-Mediterranean countries. This experience allowed me to improve my knowledge about women’s situation worldwide and to develop my interest for this subject. Over the past four years, I have been specialising in tourism, marketing, arts and technical translation, working with agencies and private clients. I also had the opportunity to translate The Bartender's Bible, by Simon Difford, published by Marabout in 2013 under the title La Bible des Cocktails, 3000 recettes illustrées, in collaboration with other translators.

In the light of my past experiences and my specialisations, I am especially interested in books talking about tourism, women’s rights, cooking and arts (music and dance), but also in children’s books as that requires to use all your creativity and imagination. As a travel-addict, I am also highly interested in translating travel guides but also books focusing on cultures and countries.
