Christopher Charlton (author)

My first novel. It is based on the story of my family in Berlin in the 1920s.

I was born in London in 1955. My German mother’s family luckily immigrated to England in 1934 and my Polish father arrived during the war. The match of a strict Polish Catholic and a young German Jewess was initially frowned upon by both families, but they persevered and spent over fifty years happily married.

Our house in Hampstead had a European and Bohemian flair. Before and during the war, my grandmother ran it as a boarding house for refugees and its reputation survived until the early 1950s. My childhood was a happy one. My parents were liberal and lovers of the arts, and they frequently entertained; their guests were ex-refugees, writers, painters, singers, and actors.

I chose a career in finance and moved to Frankfurt in 1987 where I settled. My career lasted 40 years and on my 60th birthday, I decided to walk away. I was always interested in European history and culture, especially the causes of the two world wars, and was proud to be able to witness with great satisfaction the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the integration of modern Germany into the European Union.

My three uncles wrote books about their lives and I decided that it was time to tell the story of their father and the history of the family. I wrote this as a semi-fictional novel which was published in July 2022.
