My adventures have taken me to Japan, where I lived close to seven years, and to California, where I have been residing for 6+ years. A trained and certified professional translator in both languages, I have suffered frustration on countless occasions where I saw great messages being misunderstood, or plainly ignored because of sloppy translation (over-reliance of statistical machine translation, for example) or the plain lack of appropriate training.
I have been exposed to various kinds of texts for translation, and I always had to adapt accordingly, refusing to be stuck in a pattern, and frankly needing to, as industry, level of difficulty and the flavor of the text to be translated require the ability to change mindsets and adopt effective translation strategies, and always in line with the source text, the author's intent and targets.
For literary production, I long for what I like to call "flexible accuracy" (to somehow paraphrase the no less effective term "transcreation"), where I love solving the problems offered by grammatically, stylistically and culturally challenging creative texts that cannot be simply translated word for word. This does not mean I do not work without guidelines or rules, such as glossaries that I come up with on my own or with authors, through their direct help, or indirectly through clarification of key points and concepts.
I enjoy linguistic and factual research. Not only do I believe texts should obviously always be translated accurately, but I strongly believe a quality of a source text can be matched, and at times even improved, with great writing skills that respect the typographical rules in place for the target language (French in my case).
Dictionaries are used with context in mind, and ideally with frequent communication with the author, to clear up any ambiguity the source text may have. Nothing should be assumed. Every remaining doubt needs consultation with the author, however always after massive ground work where I acquire the information I need from available online and offline tools, reference materials.
Translation, for literary purposes (fiction or non fiction) or not, is always some sort of journey where the mind has to be adaptive, resourceful. I believe my skillset and varied interests can help you achieve your goals.
I am thorough, have a great attention to detail, and I never take any task lightly. No translation is ever really the same. Every assignment is a journey of sorts.
