It is not an easy task to change the way you think. It is difficult. As you grow and develop your mind labels objects and learns to filter out extraneous information or stimuli –essentially that which you do not need to survive or is extraneous to your needs. This filtering process is called “latent inhibition” and this was a much discussed phenomenon in education and psychology in the 70s and 80s. It is important as it prevents us from being overloaded with information. A side effect as it were, is that it is often easier to learn something NEW than to un-learn something familiar. Once you have learned to associate one thing with something else it is difficult to un-learn the association. The prior learning produces an interference effect. Can you see how this complicates your efforts to improve your abstract learning skills? If you are lucky you have low latent inhibition (LLI) and this kind of person is always asking “why”. People with low latent inhibition are usually unaware that they are experiencing the world in a unique way. This often leads them to feel “inexplicably different” and they may come across as “know it alls”.
People with LLI have minds that take in a lot more material than they require causing them to swing between hyper-awareness and extreme awareness. They notice more – hear more – see more – smell more and feel more. This has advantages and means
