The waste from large livestock farms is a whole other problem. Since most animal farms are huge in scale (most cattle farms have over 5000 cattle), manure is collected in open-air waste ‘lagoons’ (if it wasn’t so gross it would be funny!), which are prone to spills and leaks. Even with no leaking these lagoons release toxic fumes to those living in the vicinity, and release ammonia, which can travel by air up to 300 miles re-depositing on land or in water. In California, large-scale cattle operations were identified as the largest source of nitrate pollution in one 100,000 square mile tract of polluted groundwater. Disease causing pathogens, such as Salmonella and E. Coli, are highly concentrated in animal feces and over 40 diseases that can be passed via manure to humans have been identified.[4]
The farms producing the majority of America’s meat are so large it is unrealistic and near impossible for them to adopt sustainable farming techniques to handle the vast amount of fecal waste they produce. A meat-based diet for earth’s 7 billion plus inhabitants is not sustainable. It’s wrecking the earth NOW.
3. Ethics
If you were a meat eater for a long time before going vegan like me, you probably used to be amused or maybe slightly alarmed when hearing the latest PETA news story. Now I’m duly interested. You cannot be a vegan for long, for whatever reason, and not see the cruelty we have imparted on our animal friends with a clearer vision. Simply put, we know how to eat healthy, we don’t need meat and we don’t need to do treat animals cruelly in order to survive.
