Now optioned by a UK film production company! As featured on BBC Newsnight, BBC Wales News, BBC Radio 4 World At One and Five Live; and in the Guardian and Sunday Express newspapers.
Operation Julie is still today the point of reference for all British undercover operations and training. In 2011, the BBC claimed this massive and unique police operation was the start of the war on drugs.
Stephen Bentley was one of four undercover detectives engaged on Operation Julie, one of the world's largest drug busts. Together with his undercover partner, he infiltrated the gang producing around 90 percent of the world's LSD and uncovered a plot to import huge quantities of Bolivian cocaine into the UK.
The underworld knew the author as Steve Jackson. How did he successfully infiltrate the two gangs? Did he have to take drugs, and how did 'living a lie' affect him?
Discover the answers and get inside the mind of Steve Jackson, undercover detective.
A fascinating, straightforward, honest account of an insider who was in truth an outsider... a tale of outrageous greed, lust, violence and bravery of a few men who had an admirable goal and how they managed it. An insider’s perspective of the drug trade, told with charm, intelligence, and at times humor, by a talented man, uniquely qualified to dish the real story, who above all was an honest decent man. Just a plain good read. - Review excerpt
This is the fully revised 2nd edition of 'Undercover: Operation Julie - The Inside Story' published by Bentley Sabrine Books after the author regained his publication rights. That enables the author to donate a portion of royalties to the charity of his choice - the James Bulger Memorial Trust.
Amazon Customer Reviews:
Brilliant book, I couldn't put it down and was gutted to finish it last night. Wonderfully written. It provides an insight into life in the late 70s and the expectations placed on undercover officers at the time. A must-read, you won't be disappointed. Liz
Great read really insightful really written well. Philip Danaher

Just knowing that the author, Stephen Bentley, was one of the two detectives assigned to go undercover in an operation which not only spanned the globe, but put his life in peril on a minute-by-minute and day-to-day basis as he infiltrated a drug cartel.
'Undercover: Operation Julie - The Inside Story' is a thriller of epic proportions. I highly recommend it, not only for the thrill of Bentley's dangerous assignment, but as a history lesson in international drug culture. Anne Carmichael
A compelling and very well written book by an extremely courageous police officer. An excellent read! Kenny
Masterfully told by undercover officer Stephen Bentley, this isn't a run of the mill sensationalist true crime book. Dive underneath the visible parts of the water and into the murky depths as you are pulled along through not just the operation but the aftermath, both personal and public. A must read for true crime lovers and historians alike. I cannot recommend this book enough. It was a very enjoyable read. Liliyana

I hinted to Eric a couple of times that I needed to stop and go pee. In his stoned mind, he must have found that hilarious as he just cackled. When stoned, and in the company of stoners, laughter is infectious. Often no one knows what they are laughing at, it just feels good. But I did need to go!
“For fuck’s sake Eric. I need to piss!”
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop.”
He braked to a sudden stop. So sudden, the passenger door fell off the van with the rope ends still attached to it. The roof cargo – the piano stool and chairs – had slid off the roof towards the back and were now hanging off the side of the van! I had been squeezed up against the passenger door when it, and me, parted company with the van.
I heard convulsions of laughter. Eric and Blue, still seated in the van, were looking down on me sprawled on top of the disconnected door. That, and the swaying loose furniture, were the sources of amusement. It was enough to send three stoned hippies into more fits of laughter. The howls and hoots ceased after about three minutes. Was it three minutes? Who knows? We were wasted! I was lying on my back on top of the errant, disconnected door when I saw a cow about three yards away. It was up against the farm field fence and staring at me. Cow eyes filled with curiosity, or amusement?
“What the fuck you staring at big eyes?” I yelled at the cow.
I added, “Got nothing else better to do? Go fuck a bull!”
Eric interjected with his country boy wisdom - “It is a bull. You prick!”

Author review: Carmen was above excellent. She works quickly and has a wonderful mastery of the English language. Despite that she was never afraid to ask for clarifications when it came to some British slang and colloquialisms. Carmen was a delight to work with and I highly recommend her. |
