Two Flew at Midnight by C.J. Pearson

Book Two of the Cordysian Chronicles Trilogy

The second book in the Cordysian Chronicles series.

Two flew at midnight

Dragon attacks for the first time in centuries. An elusive darkness rising in the east beyond the Crescent Mountains. A sinister plot to undermine the security of New Sylestia from within… and a pair of Elven warrior maidens caught in the middle of it all, with only their devotion to each other keeping them alive and giving them the strength they need to overcome such adversity, not only for themselves but for their people and their realm. Set a millennium before Where the Children of Wind Once Danced (the first book in the Cordysian Chronicles trilogy), Two Flew at Midnight explores more in depth the relationship between Lorewyn and Rhianyn amidst a tense chapter in Cordysia’s history, a testament to the challenges of friendship and the enduring power of love, and a lead into the trilogy’s war-torn finale, Knights of the Faerie Blade.

The Dragon was already sweeping back around to face his combatants head on and let loose another flaming fountain from its lungs.  Rhianyn was trying to keep Pypp away from the metaphorical end of the stove pipe.  Under normal circumstances, the owl was at least as if not more agile than the Dragon.  However, with his injured pinion...

Lorewyn suddenly had an idea.  She relaxed her bowstring for a moment, spell-tipped arrow still ready.

“Blackbird, can you get in front of him for just a second?”  she called out as Rhianyn suddenly pulled on the reins again to avoid an imminent tail slap on Pypp.  “I need a shot at his mouth!”

Rhianyn tried to turn her head to face Lorewyn in surprise but had to hastily amend her action in order to keep her eyes on the Dragon’s sudden aerial flip.

“What?!  Are you crazy???  That thing would roast us...” She suddenly realized Lorewyn’s intent.  She drew in a quick breath and tightened her grip on Pypp’s reins.  “Okay, I’ll try,” she answered.

The Dragon’s tail whooshed past them, giving Rhianyn a split second to guide Pypp up and over avoiding the giant whip-like appendage’s recoil.  They came about, past the serpent’s neck.  Lorewyn had her arrow ready.

“You’ll only have a second!”  Rhianyn shouted against the wind.

“A second’s all I’ll need!”  Lorewyn shouted back, aiming.
