Tofu is essentially a curd that is made from crushed soybeans. It is most commonly used in Asian cuisines and vegetarian dishes. Even though it is considered relatively new to the Western world, tofu has actually been around for about 2,000 years. Originated in China, it is said that tofu was discovered by accident when a Chinese cook accidentally curdled some soymilk when nigari seaweed was added.
Tofu was first introduced to Japan in the eighth century and was known as okabe. The name tofu didn’t come about until around the 1400s. In the 1960s when the Western world become interested in eating more healthy, tofu was introduced. Studies upon studies have shown the many benefits of consuming tofu and soya.
Tofu is derived from soya protein, which is beneficial in many ways. Most experts believe that soya protein actually helps to lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL). Furthermore, tofu is full of isoflavones, which is a chemical naturally found in plant foods. These isoflavones are similar in structure to estrogen. This means they can mimic the natural actions of estrogen that is produced by the human body. In addition, isoflavones actually bin to the estrogen receptors naturally to help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Because of this, many women have switched to a diet that is high in tofu. In fact, women going through menopause have found that a diet rich in tofu can help relieve their symptoms.
